Cathedral of St. James
One of the most significant architectural achievements in Croatia, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. It was built over more than a hundred years, in the 15th and 16th centuries, entirely of stone. Its master builders were Juraj Dalmatinac (Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus) and Nikola Firentinac (Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino).
Begun in the Gothic style and completed in the Renaissance, it is crowned by Fiorentino’s dome, damaged in the Croatian War of Independence and today a symbol of Šibenik. Look for the frieze of 71 carved heads on the outside of the apses; historians still debate who they portray.
